Lord Dufferin thanks Sturgis and his wife for being his best and most constant friends. He agrees to send Sturgis his dispatches, in particular the ones involving the recent Pacific scandal. Lord Dufferin discusses his opinions on the scandal, offering his sympathies for Macdonald, for being attacked so aggressively by both the opposition and the press, as well as his sympathies for the opposition party, as they have never known political power. He feels that Macdonald, while he should be punished, did not act with the intent of sacrificing the interests of Canada, as well as arguing that a change in administration could be good for the country.
