Lord Dufferin assures Mrs. Sturgis that she can include gossip in private letters as he opens private correspondence personally. Lord Dufferin describes the Governor General home as desolate and describes the unfinished quality of Ottawa, commenting on the strips of mud for streets and the new houses and shops that are built or being built. The only thing he is impressed by is the Gothic architecture of the parliamentary buildings being built. He also discusses how he is bringing prestige back to the position of Governor General, mentioning in particular a recent visit to Quebec where his arrival was lackluster.
