This accession consists mainly of small books and ledgers created by the Horticultural Division of the Experimental Farm. The records document the growth and development of a large variety of fruit trees and vegetables.
This collections dates from the 1880s to the mid 1970s and includes portraits of Dominion Agrostologists; attendees of the 1924 Rust Conference; the Field Husbandry Division of the Department of Agriculture, at the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa (1948) and the Experimental Farm Service Conference of Officers (1952). Collection contains three albumen prints of the Experimental Farm at Indian Head, N.W.T. (now Saskatchewan), one of the earliest Experimental Farms in Canada (established in 1886 with the passing of the Act of Respecting Experimental Farm Stations). Other images include snapshots from a tour of family farms in Alberta during 1932; varieties of horticultural specimens (some of which were developed at Canadian Experimental Farms) including: trees, hedges, flowers (lilies and lilacs), fruits and vegetables; some photographs show various types of damage to sample specimens and images of specimens in various stages of growth. Photos in this collection also document early farm machinery, including tractors created from early automobiles; methods of spraying pesticides; machinery used in the sorting and processing of fruit and plans of typical apple orchard plantings. Photos from exhibitions from the 1910's and then again from the 1950's are included. In addition, some photographs were taken of laboratory staff at the Central Experimental Farm in the mid 1970's.
Please note that while there is photographic material available in GAD accession 1996-97/1066, this material has been catalogued separately from the single box of graphic-only records found searching R194.
