Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled: "SANDFORD FLEMING OTTAWA 1876" on front cover, with a blue interior cover with "Diary 1876 " stamped on it, and an interor title as follows: "The Canadian Pocket Diary for 1875", Toronto: Published by Brown Bros, 66 King Street East.

Diary contains pockets to place miscellaneous items, with words indicating where to put letters, postage stamps, and bill stamps.

Diary contains handwritten entries for the entire year, with accounting information as well. He notes on Jan. 8 that he has heard by telegram that his "poor brother John" had died and that he had left on a train for Toronto and then Craigleith for funeral. Later, in July, Fleming writes that he is leaving on a steamer for England. It appears he is there until at least October, but there are very few notes about the journey in this diary.
