Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled: "SANDFORD FLEMING 1874" on front cover, with a green interior cover with "Diary 1874" stamped on it, and an interor title as follows: "The Canadian Pocket Diary for 1874", Toronto: Published by Brown Bros, 66 King Street East.

Diary contains pockets to place miscellaneous items, with words indicating where to put letters, postage stamps, and bill stamps.

Diary contains handwritten entries only from July 1874 onwards, with accounting information as well. These entries document Fleming's travel with his family from Ottawa to New Brunswick and Nova Scotia for the summer, and continue sporadically until October, when they family returns to Ottawa.
