Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled: "SANDFORD FLEMING HALIFAX and OTTAWA, 1870" on front cover, with a green interior cover with "Diary 1870" stamped on it, and an interor title as follows: "The Canadian Pocket Diary for 1870", Toronto: Published by Brown Bros, 66 King Street East.

Diary contains pockets to place miscellaneous items, with words indicating where to put letters, postage stamps, and bill stamps.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year, with accounting information as well. On January 1st, he notes he is in Ottawa with his family for the winter. On January 3, Fleming notes: "Married 15 years today at Reception Rideau Hall."

There is also a loose document which contains a list of plants, with the following: "These plants were transferred to Mr. Black's conservatory, to be cared for by his gardener for the winter, Halifax, October 1869."
