The Labour Standards Branch of the Department of Labour was responsible for enforcing the Fair Wages and Hours of Labour Act, which required employers having contracts with the federal government to maintain certain standards in the areas of hours of work and pay that were articulated in the Act.
The records in this accession consist of administrative and complaint and inspection files. Subjects include departmental manuals; monthly reports; statistics; speeches; correspondence with unions, associations and organizations; and overtime and accident reports. The complaint records include complaint forms and correspondence regarding dismissals, wages owing, holiday and overtime pay, wage calculations, and the resolution of complaints.
