Item consists of an overszed black leather-bound diary. The diary has an interior title as follows: "Diary and Memorandum Book for 1867, Containing a Blank Space for Every Day in the Year, Cash Account, Bills Payable and Receivable, and Memoranda. Concord: Published by E.C. Eastman, 1867. Press of George C. Rand and Avery, 3 Cornhill."

Diary contains pockets to place miscellaneous items.

Diary contains brief handwritten entries for parts of the year. On January 1, 1867, Fleming notes that he was in Halifax on this day, but also notes that passenger trains were now running on the Pictou Railway. On January 7, he notes that he is 40 years old. On June 29, he writes: " Preparing for Celebration of Confederation of the Provinces next Monday." On July 1,1867 (Dominion Day) there is a fairly brief entry which says: "Up at 5'oclock, very cloudy and rain...putting up flags etc. Clouds cleared away. Halifax very gay, a perfect sea of flags. Beautiful day. The demonstration went off splendidly." On September 19, there is a handwritten notice, and a clipping from the newspaper, noting that Fleming's wife Jeanie had given birth to a daughter.
