Item consists of an overszed diary. The covers are missing. There is an interior title - in black and red - as follows: "Pocket Diary 1864." Published Annually by Denton and Wood, Cambridgeport, Mass. Title page has an elaborate floral border design, as well as an ilustration of a sitting woman holding a pen and a book.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year. On January 1, 1864, Fleming writes: "Morning train to Collingwood, Stage to Craigleith - Father and Mother had all their children around them...they thought I was in New Brunswick and were astonished and glad to see me...very cold and stormy." In the spring of 1864 Fleming brought his family from Toronto to Halifax, in order for them to be closer to his work as chief surveyor of the Intercolonial Railway. They moved into a house on Brunswick Street (now 2549 Brunswick Street). There are a few cryptic entries in the diary relating to the move, starting on May 18 "Left Toronto last night" and ending on May 30, 1864.
