Marc Garneau : Born on February 23, 1949 in Québec City, Dr. Marc Garneau was one of the first class of Canadian astronauts selected in 1983 by the National Research Council of Canada, and the first Canadian to fly in space. Dr. Garneau graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1970 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics. He then obtained his doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England in 1973.

Dr. Garneau became the first Canadian to fly in space when he launched on board the Space Shuttle Challenger for the STS-41-G mission in October 1984. Following this mission, Dr. Garneau retired for the Royal Canadian Navy in 1989 to become the Deputy Director of the Canadian Astronaut Program. Dr. Garneau would fly in space an additional two times; once in May 1996 on STS-77, and once in November/December 2000 on STS-97, both times flying onboard Space Shuttle Endeavour.

In February of 2001, Dr. Garneau was appointed executive vice-president of the Canadian Space Agency. Later that year, he was given the position of President of the Canadian Space Agency, a role he assumed on November 22, 2001. He would resign from this position on November 28, 2005 to run for election for the Federal Government.

Dr. Garneau was first elected as a member of the Liberal Party of Canada on October 14, 2008, and now serves as the Minister of Transport.
