Telesat Canada : Telesat Canada was founded in 1969 through the TELESAT CANADA ACT based on the recommendations of the 1967 Chapman Report. Events of the late 1960's resulted in the Canadian Government founding Telesat Canada with the objective of developing and marketing satellite telecommunications services to a set of "approved carriers" as defined by the Act.

Telesat Canada soon launched its first satellite, Anik A1 on November 9, 1972. While the TELESAT CANADA ACT stated that Telesat Canada was required to procure all satellites from Canadian companies, the Anik A series were purchased from United States based Hughes Aircraft Company, with SPAR Aerospace being a major subcontractor. Anik A1 was the first domestic telecommunications satellite.

In 1998 through the TELESAT CANADA REORGANIZATION AND DIVESTITURE ACT the Canadian federal government sold its shares of Telesat resulting in it becoming a private company in compliance with the CANADA BUSINESS CORPORATIONS ACT.

Telesat Canada operates two main families of communications satellites, the Anik and Nimiq series which provide satellite services through Bell Canada and Shaw Media.
