Committee on Earth Observation Satellites : The Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) was founded in September 1984, with the Canadian Space Agency as one of the founding agencies. The original function of the committee was to make data from Earth Observation satellites easier to access and use. This was done by focusing on interoperability, common data formats, similar calibration and validation standards and procedures for instruments, and the ability for products from different source satellites to be compared. This allowed for data from different satellites, such as from an original and replacement, to be compared to observe changes in the observations.

Since the founding of the committee, the number of Earth Observation satellites, complexity of instruments, and quantity of data that can be created and transferred to Earth have increased dramatically. This combined with a changing user base which is now more diverse and organized, using more data formats, and for new applications has forced the committee to expand its focus. The Committee now additionally focuses on validating requirements from external organizations.
