Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled "DIARY, 1854" on front cover, with an interior title as follows: "Octavo Diary or Daily Remembrancer for 1854, Containing a Blank for Every Day in the Year, for the Record of Interesting Events, Appointments, Bills Payable, Receivable, etc etc.", Boston: Published By I.L. Kidder, No. 77 Washington Street, Joy's Building.

Diary contains sporadic to detailed handwritten entries for the entire year. Fleming notes on Jan. 1, 1854 that he was "Up pretty late. New suit of winter black clothes to Father. Happy New Year! Father and Mother out in the country at the farm...City Elections (Toronto?) going on today, great excitement among politicians in city affairs." Accounting information about money in and out of his bank account at the very end of the diary.
