Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled: "SANFORD FLEMING HALIFAX, CANADA, 1869" on front cover, with an interior title as follows: "The Canadian Pocket Diary for 1869", Toronto: Published by Brown Bros, 66 King Street East.

Diary contains pockets to place miscellaneous items, with words indicating where to put letters, postage stamps, and bill stamps.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year, with accounting information as well. Fleming, as usual, travels a lot. Here is an example of his travel in a short period in early January 1869: January 1 he is in Amherst, Nova Scotia, January 8, he is in Matapedia, on January 13 he is in Ottawa, Ontario (he notes " Saw all the ministers in turn at Privy Council this morning."), and on January 19 he is back in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
