Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled "SANDFORD FLEMING TORONTO, 1859" on front cover, with an interior title as follows: "A Pocket Diary for 1859; Containing A Blank Space for Every Day in the Year for the Record of Interesting Events, a Cash Account for Each Month, Bills Payable and Receivable, etc etc etc." Published annually by Denton and Wood, Cambridgeport, Mass. 1859.
Diary contains a pocket to place miscellaneous items.

Diary has the following piece of information pasted into the inside front cover: "James Bain, Bookseller, King Street, Toronto."

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year. Fleming notes that he is in Collingwood on January 1, 1859. A loose clipping inserted into the diary at April 13, 1859 is a "Notice to Navigators" wrtitten by Hugh Richardson, Harbour Master for Toronto. Another loose clipping inserted into the diary at May 25, 1859 is as follows "Northern Railway. Tenders For Earth Filling and Materials." At the end of the year, on December 31, 1859 he writes: "Another year on the eve of closing and here I am sitting in Mr. Halls family, Peterboro, with my good wife close by, two dear little boys, and little girl sound asleep in bed..."
