Item consists of a black leather-bound diary, with gold-tooled "DIARY, 1857" on front cover, with an interior title as follows: "Marsh's Octavio Diary, or Daily Remembrancer for 1857, Containing A Blank for Every Day in the Year, For the Record of Interesting Events, Appointmentrs, Bills Payable, Receivable, Etc, Etc.", Boston, Published by John Marsh and Company, Importers and Manufacturing Stationers, No. 77 Washington Street, Joy's Building.

Diary contains sporadic handwritten entries for the entire year. Fleming notes that he is in Peterborough, Ontario on January 1, 1857. There are a few additional loose items within the diary, including one that is dated June 9th, 1857 and has notations for the flow of water in Craigleith (near Collingwood), Ontario.
