Item consists of a leather-bound diary with an interior title as follows: "Daily Pocket Remembrancer, For 1848, for the Use of Private Families and Persons of Business, Containing An Almanac - Banking Table - Counting How Almanac, and a blank space for Memorandum for Every Day of the Year", New York, Spalding and Shepard, No 189 1/2 Broadway, 1848.

The first page is stamped with the name "Sir Sandford Fleming". The second page, in small handwriting, has "Sandford A. Fleming, January 1st 1848, Toronto".

For the first 8 months of 1848, Fleming has written something for every day. During the month of August, the entries are sporadic, then Sept-Nov. there are entries every days, and then from Nov-Dec., the entries are sporadic again. An unusual feature of the diary is that the Sunday for each month is given a space on pages at the very end of the volume.
