The records in this accession were created in the office of the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) during the two tenures of General John de Chastelaine, who held the post from September 1989 to January 1993, and from January 1994 to July 1995, and during the period in which Vice Admiral Anderson held the post from January to December 1993. The CDS has overall command responsibility for the direction of the Canadian Forces (CF) and reports to the Minister of National Defence.
The records consists of files maintained in an informal records system which provided for some subject files and for a run of "demi-official" correspondence. There are both administrative and operational records in this accession, including such matters as the Oka stand-off, the Gulf War, United Nations peacekeeping operations, and other CF activities. The administrative records primarily deal with the ceremonial and titular responsibilities related to the holder of the CDS office.
It should be noted that the electronic records in this accession were brought under care and control of the NA as RG 24 1996-97/1069. Box 33 of this accession contained photos and video tapes and was transferred to the Visual and Sound Archives of the National Defence.
