Accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the Canadian Transportation Agency and its predecessors. The records consist of line and service abandonment files. Before a rail service or a railway line can be abandoned, the action had to be approved by the Board, Commission, or Agency responsible at the time. Because of both the actual and the traditional economic and social importance of the railways in Canada, these proposed abandonments were usually the subject of a vigorously contested hearing. The documents record arguments pro and con for the abandonment as well as a quantity of historical background about the line concerned, including the area it served, its past, present and estimated future use and other factors taken into account in the final decision issued by the Board, Commission, or Agency.
