Space Station Freedom (SSF) was first announced in 1984 to be a large, permanently manned space station in low Earth orbit. SSF was originally designed to act as a "port" in space, which would allow for scientific experimentation, satellite repair, spacecraft assembly, and commercial processes such as protein synthesis, highly refined semi-conductor manufacture, and crystal growth. As the design of SSF progressed over time, the overall cost increased dramatically, and various different design iterations were examined.

The costs associated with SSF and consistent failure of the design to meet targets for mass, budget, ease of manufacture and capability resulted in the cancellation of SSF in 1993 and subsequent redesign into the smaller International Space Station (ISS).

This collection of SSF drawings display the launch configurations of SSF for each of the planned twenty nine assembly launches. In these drawings it is possible to see the progression of the assembly of SSF from the initial launch to the final completed configuration. Some of this work was repurposed into the manufacture of the ISS.
