This small anonymous, handwritten journal contains accounts of two nineteenth-century British military expeditions in Africa. The Abyssinian Campaign of 1867-8 took place in present day Ethiopia when a British force under Lieutenant-general Sir Robert Napier was sent to punish the Ethiopian Empire. The Ashanti Campaign of 1873-4, also known as the Third Anglo-Ashanti War, took place in present day Ghana. A British force under Brigadier-general Sir Garnet Wolseley was sent to punish the Ashanti Kingdom.

The level of detail in the journal strongly suggests that its author was an officer who participated in the campaign. He may have been Canadian, though it is most likely that he was British. The journal focusses on tactical and logistical matters and mentions individuals only very briefly. Much of the journal is a detailed account of the Battle of Magdala, which culminated the Abyssinian campaigns. The journal includes two small sketches.

The journal is linked to hand-drawn maps of the routes followed by the British forces in these campaigns. The maps are found in MIKAN 2005-1202.
