Francis Murphy had a rusted-open door, and further along, inside, three things: a bed, a table saw, and a TV. More often than not you'd have to take charge: just walk in, wake him up and say: "Are we going fishing?" And then you'd look down. Crunchy cat food everywhere - and underfoot, in the corridor, on the table saw, under the bed, hanging off the windowscreen - cats. Maybe fifty. Anyway, the most I've seen in one place. Often, Francis would reach down and grab one by the scruff of the neck, and give it a good, hard stare. "Ah yep, this one's called Village". "Francis, why's that?" Obviously: "Well, that's where I found it." Then he'd toss it aside. A year earlier, he'd asked me to take his photo. In the doorway. Now Francis was a craftsman. He'd helped put the roof on the Banff Springs Hotel, but this home was his haven - this was his favorite place to be. I was just about to take his picture, when he straightened up and asked me: "Should I put my teeth in?" The teeth I had seen. On the table saw, yellow, waxy and not so fresh; I said that it really wasn't necessary. Afterwards he gave me some old cameras as a gift. He explained: "Wouldn't be the first time my face has broken something." And so Francis the bachelor, Francis the drinker, Francis the cat collector, Francis the only person I have met out of thousands who, when given a photo of themselves said: "I'll frame it." He had this ability to lift up everyone around him - all of the time.
