This serie concerns Poitevin's activities as a research consultant to medical science in the area of silicosis, an incurable respiratory disease that largely effects miners and other industrial workers exposed to silica dust. Beginning in 1931, Poitevin did research for the province of Ontario's Division of Industrial Hygiene and from 1936-39, for the University of Toronto's Banting Institute. His work largely entailed determining the nature of inorganic particles found in the ashed lungs of miners and persons in other occupations. This work was largely conducted in Poitevin's off hours throughout the 1930s and was extended to include the asbestos mines in Quebec. The serie also reflects how Poitevin's expertise in silicosis was sought by industry and unions; included are correspondence, files and analysis reports conducted in response to inquiries from various industries such as the McIntyre Porcupine Mines Limited in Ontario, Luscar Coal Limited in Alberta, Dominion Steel & Coal Corporation Limited in Nova Scotia and the Brotherhood Railway - Carmen of America.

This serie includes correspondence, lung sample analysis notes, calculations, statistics, tables of data, graphs, and copies and draft copies of Poitevin's lecture notes and original papers on silicosis. There is also a large amount of national and international reports and articles on silicosis. A small amount of correspondence to and from Canadian Nobel laureate Frederick Banting is included, along with a letter written by Banting in which he praises Poitevin for his work. Banting's studies are noted as contributing to the understanding of the disease.
