Short excerpts from eight speeches by Sir Winston Churchill: from speech in the House of Commons on 18 June 1940, as follows: " . . . but if we fail the world will sink into an abyss of a new Dark Age . . . Let us . . . brace ourselves to our duties . . . so men will say: this was their finest hour."; from speech on 22 June 1941: " . . . the bestial assault you [the Germans] are making on the Russian people . . . You [Germany] do your worst and we'll do our best . . . "; from speech to the U.S. Congress circa 26 December 1941: "I do not feel quite like a fish out of water in a legislative assembly where English is spoken . . . "; from speech of 19 May 1940: "Arm yourselves . . . be men of valor . . . be in readiness for conflict. It is better for us to perish in battle than to look upon the outrage of our nation and our altar. As the will of God is in Heaven, even so let it be."; from speech of 9 February 1941: "The other day President Roosevelt gave his opponent in the Presidential election a letter of introduction to me . . . we shall not fail or falter, we shalll not weaken or tire . . . Give us the tools and we shall finish the job."; speech circa November 1940: " . . . Mussolini has congratulated the Italian army in Albania on the glorious laurels they have gained on their victory over the Greeks . . . this whipped jackal Mussolini . . . to save his own skin has made all Italy a battle state of Hitler's empire . . . yelping at the side of the German tiger . . . When we come to the final reckoning, this absurd impostor shall be abandoned to public justice and universal scorn."; from speech during the Battle of Britain, 16 August 1940: "Now the old lion with her lion cubs at her side stands alone against hunters who are armed with deadly weapons . . . stars in their courses proclaim the deliverance of mankind . . .
