This accession touches on all aspects of the Geological Survey of Canada's (GSC) mandate. Although some of the records date as early as 1931 and as late as 1982, the vast majority were created in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. For the most part, the classification system used for this series was created when the GSC was part of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys. The classification is based on a block numeric system and uses numerics only, to a maximum of four levels. When Mines and Technical Surveys was re-organized in 1966 to become the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, the filing system of the former department was maintained by the GSC for at least another decade, well after most other agencies in EMR had implemented an entirely new block numeric classification - one which used a combination of numerics and alphas to a maximum of three levels.
The files included in this accession are from the "100" file block, which is primarily limited to administrative matters concerning the GSC. It contains a wide range of subject files, policy files, and correspondence. The latter includes correspondence from the offices of the minister and deputy minister, as well as minutes of a number of national and international committees on which the GSC had some form of representation, such as the International Association of Volcanology, the International Sub-Committee on Precambrian Stratigraphy, and the National Geological Surveys Committee. Subject files cover such topics as mineral exploration agreements with the provinces, GSC field equipment, and various mineral files.
