The Occupational Health Division was first established in 1938 as the Division of Industrial Hygiene. Its original mandate was to promote good health practices in the workplace and to act as a consultant on occupational health to other federal and provincial government departments and agencies. From 1953 to 1962, Environmental Health and Special Projects of the Health Services Directorate of the Department of National Health and Welfare served as an umbrella unit to oversee the Occupational Health, Public Health Engineering, and Radiation Protection Divisions. By the late 1960s, the Division was concerned not only with such occupational health concerns as dangerous substances, heat, noise, lighting, and radiation, but with all aspects of environmental health. The umbrella unit was renamed as the Environmental Health Directorate in 1970, and was given the responsibility of studying, and in some cases controlling, the effects of various health hazards on Canadians, such as radiation and toxic chemicals in the air and in water. The Directorate became part of the new Health Protection Branch in January 1972.
