The records in this accession were created by the former Chairman of the Immigration Appeal Board and its successor, the Immigration Refugee Board, Mr. Robert Gordon Lee Fairweather. Mr. Fairweather was Chairman of the Board from 1987 to 1992.
The role of the Chairman of the Board entails the following types of responsibilities: the Chair reports to Parliament through the Minister once a year on the operations of the Board; serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Board; presents at IRB training sessions for their Members; gives speeches and workshops; and participates in discussions regarding important or controversial cases that have an affect on IRB's policies and procedures. In addition to his/her main responsibilities, the Chair also attends conferences and symposia that relate to issues surrounding immigration and refugee matters and receives visits from foreign dignitaries.
The records consist of a variety of documents that reflect the diverse nature of the position of Chairman of the Board. They consist of records such as: correspondence, speeches, itineraries, agendas and minutes from meetings, conference programs, copies of transcripts from special immigration and refugee cases that were handled by the Board, and documentation from swearing-in ceremonies.

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
