Minister of State : The Ministry of State for Science and Technology (MOSST) was established by an Order in Council in 1971 to assume primary responsibility within the federal government for the coordination of the government's science and technology policies and for advising the government on the use of science and technology in support of Canada's economic and social goals. On August 4, 1987, the Prime Minister announced plans to create the Department of Industry, Science and Technology to lead the government's economic development effort. The new department brought together the Department of Regional Industrial Expansion (DRIE) and the Ministry of State for Science and Technology. The Prime Minister also announced that the government was taking immediate action to enhance the role of science and technology in economic development by combining the Industry and Science and Technology portfolios in the person of the Minister of Regional Industrial Expansion, who was assigned the additional role of Minster of State for Science and Technology. The former Minister of State for Science and Technology was appointed Minister of State (Science and Technology). [MOSST, Annual Report 1987-88]
