The records include administrative and operational files arranged according to subject headings that reflect processes and events which enabled the JCRS to achieve its mandate, including development of eligibility criteria for claimants, committee meetings, historical research, financial documentation, media coverage, related conferences and projects, and public responses.

Japanese Canadian Redress Secretariat : The Japanese Canadian Redress Secretariat (JCRS) was created by the Government of Canada to implement the terms of the Japanese Canadian Redress Agreement, signed on September 22, 1988 by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and the president of the National Association of Japanese Canadians, Art Miki. The official mandate of the JCRS was to administer the redress program which provided compensation to Japanese Canadians who were unjustly treated during and after the Second World War. Its main role was to determine if applicants were eligible for redress and to distribute cheques to individuals who complied with the established guidelines, thereby fulfilling the requirements of the Agreement.

The JCRS was initially part of the Department of the Secretary of State, which oversaw the multiculturalism function. The JCRS later became part of the Department of Multiculturalism and Citizenship in 1991 under the Department of Multiculturalism and Citizenship Act; in 1996, it moved to the Multiculturalism Branch in the Department of Canadian Heritage.
