This sub-series consists of records produced by the Marine Superintendent (Hull and Machinery), a sub-division in the Steamship Division. Most of files belonged to Captain Thomas Karl Coates who served as Marine Superintendent from April 1988 to 2001. Later files belonged to Captain S. Zawacki who replaced Captain Coates in 2001. The extent of the files range between 1927 and 2002, however most of them refer to marine hull operations of the N. M. Paterson & Sons Ltd. from the late 1950s to 2002.

The files in this sub-series consist of three categories of records:

- Records related to human resources of vessels which include: crew member files, applicant resumes, files on appointments, employee vacation time, performance reports, disciplinary files, employee grievance files, Lloyd's certificates, negotiations and copies of collective agreements with the Canadian Marine Officers Union, safety training for crew members and the implementation of government regulations on safety and environment management, and others.

- Records related to hull operations and activities, which consists of vessel inventories and inventory records for winter work, repairs of vessels and vessel safety inspections, pilotage records, cargo plans for trips between 1994 and 2001. There are also files relating to the administration of Occupational Health and Safety policies on N.M. Paterson & Sons Limited's vessels. This includes files on the implementation of drug and alcohol abuse prevention programs, oil spill response plans, regular water analyses, and on regular inspections of safety equipment of vessels.

- Correspondence and minutes of meetings produced by members of several industrial organizations and committees. These include: the Georgian College Marine Advisory Committee, the Dominion Marine Association's Navigation Committee and Regulation Review Committee, the Canadian Lake Carriers Association's Safety Committee, the Marine Labour Committee, the Canadian Shipowners' Association's Operation Committee and Pilotage Committee, the Seafarers International Union and the Canadian Merchant Service Guild. Some files contain correspondence with the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard.

Some containers also contain financial records and audits for the marine division between 1989 and 2001, including daily earning reports, monthly earnings reports and seasonal budgets.
