The file holds a commonplace book kept by Robert Hume and perhaps other members of his family. It includes verse and inspirational passages transcribed by Hume, particularly a long passage, "On Attachment to Home", credited to George Pow, 1820 (an emigrant from Northumberland to Ohio), and a poem "Searching after Happiness", dated 26 June 1837, by his future sister-in-law, Ann Jopling (1810-1850). There is also a pencil sketch of a home on a pond or lake. The latter part of the book mostly holds clippings from newspapers, including personal advice and household hints, with titles like "the use of lemons", "linseed for a cold", "plant houses", and articles about individuals like Harriet Beecher Stowe and Abraham Lincoln.

For the commonplace book, Hume used an account book or journal of blank pages, purchased from Henry Rowsell, stationer, of King Street, Toronto (agent for Rowsell & Son of Cheapside, London). It is dated 1836, by Robert Hume of Port Hope, Ontario.
