Series consists of textual records produced, received and/or maintained by Cultural Data Services. The majority of records were created during the organizations short existence in 1972. However, there are also some records created between 1965 and 1971 that serve as background information to the major projects CDS was engaged with during their tenure. The records of this series are largely comprised of correspondences, completed questionnaires and surveys, interview transcripts, draft reports and notes, and memorandums. Also included are a small number of financial records, modern postal covers from the early 1970s, newspaper clippings, and program information obtained from art galleries and art organizations across Canada. Files are arranged according to original file title which generally relate to one of the CDS research projects detailed below.

The contents of this series include: an Artists Inventory of all practicing artists in Canada for the purpose of creating a national mailing list for the Canadian Conference of the Arts; an Arts Youth Assessment project that sought to study youth engagement with the arts; a study of the feasibility of establishing a National Artists' Pension Plan; a study of the relationship between the arts and the corporate business world; and a study of the role of volunteers in the arts.

The main project that CDS was engaged in compiling - the National Artists Inventory - was ultimately completed by the CCA in 1974 and published as the Canadian Arts Directory (1974).

Cultural Data Services : Cultural Data Services (CDS) was a government-funded Toronto-based non-profit organization affiliated with the Canadian Conference of the Arts (CCA). It was created through the Government of Canada's Local Initiatives Program (LIP) - grant number 311-1277 - with a mandate to "contribute to existing levels of information regarding arts in Canada by compiling a number of directories and by undertaking preliminary research studies." Cultural Data Services commenced operation on February 21, 1972, and was funded until November 1972. When operations ceased, completed projects were submitted to the Canadian Conference of the Arts. The CCA also inherited all of the records produced or maintained by CDS during the course of their organizations operation.

Custodial history:

The Canadian Conference of the Arts took custody of all of Cultural Data Services' records after the organization ceased operation at the end of November, 1972.
