The majority of these maps were produced between 1775-1784. The Atlantic Neptune consisted of 5 volumes and as Des Barres surveyed areas, he updated certain plates then re-published them. This means that one plate can be published in 1776, 1777, 1780 and 1784 with slight changes each time.

This series holds the containers for the multiple editions and volumes of the atlas Atlantic Neptune. Of the various printings of this atlas, we hold 488 plates from four editions (1779, 1780, 1781 and 1784) along with 29 original copper plates from the 1784 edition.

The atlas Atlantic Neptune was divided into five volumes:
1. Surveys of the coast and harbors [sic] of Nova Scotia
2. Charts of the coast and harbors [sic] of New England
3. Charts of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the islands of Cape Breton and St. John [sic, modern-day Prince Edward Island]
4. Coast of North America south of New York
5. Various views of the North American coast

All of the charts in this atlas were drafted and printed by J.F.W. Des Barres between 1774-1784, covering the changing coast of North America from Newfoundland to New York during the American Revolution and United Empire Loyalist migrations.

Note on the state of conservation:

All pages of this atlas (except for the 1966 facsimile) have been dismantled for conservation purposes.

Custodial history:

This atlas and its respective plates were received in two groups: the first in 1926 was a largely complete set from Earl Amherst of Montreal, Sevenoaks, England while the second group is a mixture of different plates from different editions acquired from various sources.

In the finding aid, there are two dates ascribed to some plates. The first date listed refers to the date the edition of this atlas was published, while the second date listed in parenthesis is the date the map was surveyed.

The majority of these items have physical restrictions and will not circulate due to their fragility and age. Please consult on site in Gatineau (Québec) in the presence of a cartographic archivist.
