Both individuals were born in 1947. Paul was born in the Dominican Republic and came to Canada in 1970 after attending Stanford. Paul was involved in the Dare Fods strike in Kitchener and met Evelina on the picket line. Evelina was born in New York City but moved to Guelph in 1968 and began working at the International Union of Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers (EU). They took a Party assignment in Thunder Bay where they remained for 18 years. Paul was blacklisted in the Waterloo region in the run up to taking the low-paid assignment at Lakehead.
