George was born in Schumaker in 1935. Joan was born in Quebec in 1946. Joan was in the Canadian Party of Labour until 1978. George grew up in Timmins. His mother then worked in the Workers Co-op of New Ontario. Co-ops were vulnerable to Supermarket penetration in the early 1950s. George grew up in a Left wing home. His brother Art was the political animal in the family, active in the Communist Party of Canada (CPC). George only became active in the Party in 1978. Joan attended the founding convention of the Canadian Party of Labour. She met George in the Peace movement. George was in the Spark Club on joining in 1977.
