Interview of Rob Fairley by Rick Stow. Rob Fairley was born in Toronto in 1949. Very early on, Rob was taken on demos and picket line support. His father testified for the defence at the Fred Rose trial, and was fired from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) International Service for his trouble. As Rob got involved in opposing the Vietnam War, the lessons he learned about Left activism were from non-Communist Party members. He was attracted to the Canadian Party of Labour, a Stalinist grouping of about one hundred and fifty, as it was the only group articulating a line supporting the Vietnamese Revolution. Rob liked its 'in your face' activism. He became a member of Toronto Hydro to plant the seeds of Stalinism in the local. After passing probation, he sold 'The Worker' outside the shop and sought a union career inside. A close vote of the membership allowed him to stand for office in defiance of Canadian Union of Public Employees' (CUPE) anti-Communist provisions. He parlayed this into union positions as steward, Health and Safety rep, and, after he had left the Canadian Party of Labor (CPL), president of his local. Although he could get some of his union colleagues out to events, no one was recruited to the Canadian Party of Labour while he was at Hydro. Remnants of the CPL still exist, and largely now support the 'Pink Paper' group of New Democratic Party (NDP) loyalists in the trade union movement. Members of his family joined him and supported the activities of the Ultra Left while he was a member. <45mn>
