Gregory Baum was born in 1923 in Berlin, to a Protestant family of Jewish background. He became a refugee to England in 1939, thence becoming an internee in Canada. He entered McMaster in math and science, but became interested in religion. He embraced Catholicism, joined an order, was ordained and practised. He became a professor, specializing in Religion and Society, in dialogue with Political Science, and was named Emeritus in Religion at McGill. He discusses the roots of the Social Gospel and Catholic Cooperative movements. In 1960s Latin America. Baum discusses the Antigonish movement. He traces relations between the Church and Cooperative commonwealth Federation (CCF).
