Fonds consists of photographs taken during the trip of Norman Sanders from Winnipeg to Chesterfield Inlet via Churchill on board a train and the famous R.M.S. Nascopie ship. An avid photographer, Norman Sanders took many photographs locating, showing and naming the people, landscapes and the built environment. He was able to record the daily life of Chesterfield Inlet as it was in the 1940s, from community social events to wandering out onto the sea ice hunting seals with the Inuit. Original photos were captured with black and white negative film and developed using a darkroom (see photo no. 74 on the DVD). Some photos were taken with colour positive Kodachrome film.

Sanders, Norman : In 1943 at the age of 19, Norman Sanders began to work for the Department of Transport, with postings at small airports throughout Ontario responsible for operating the radio ranges, air traffic control and meteorological reporting. In August 1945 he volunteered for the marine branch and travelled to Chesterfield Inlet in the Northwest Territories (Nunavut). He lived there for one year with the other Department of Transport employees, those of the Hudson's Bay Company Store, the RCMP detachment, the bishop and brothers of the Catholic Church, the nuns who ran the hospital, along with the local Inuit.
