ROLL ONE: Shot of man with a display of commercial products displayed on a table in front of him; "How do you do everyone? This is Beau Summers (sp?). We have something for your attention which we feel will prove of interest to you. Something which, perhaps, you have never seen or heard before. Sound on colour film. The presentation of this picture is intended to demonstrate the value of colour with natural sound as a medium of commercial advertising. There can be no question as to the value of colour in advertising. And certainly, no reproduction of colour can be as faithful as that you see here. Look at the beauty of this packet of Muffets. The colour in this tin of tomatoe juice. The realism of this packet of well-known biscuits (Weston's English Quality Biscuits with portraits of the King & Queen and the words Welcome to Canada 1939 are displayed on the side of the box). You will notice that even the portraits of our King and Queen are now faithfully reproduced. As are the colours on these other objects. (the camera pans across the display table to showcase some of the brands of products; 'Crax', 'Red River' cereal, 'Olde Town' syrup, 'Rinso', Oxydol', 'Aunt Jemima' pancake mix, 'Ivory Starch', 'Ritz', and 'Ovaltine'). And as the colour film has the advantage over all other reproductions of colour, so the spoken word holds the attention to a far greater degree than does the written word. The talking picture is the only medium of advertising that appeals both to the eye and the ear. The talking picture demands 100 percent concentration from the audience. The present advertisements may be glanced at or ignored. The radio program that does not appeal, can be switched off. But once the audience is in the screening room, the talking picture must be seen and heard. The film you are now seeing and hearing is a simultaneous recording of colour and sound and as a print taken from the original negative. Here we wish to emphasize that any number of prints can now be taken, each retaining the quality of colour and sound of the original negative. The cost of these prints is such that has placed them within reach of the purchasing power of the most economic of advertising budgets. We now turn to the field of art." Shot of two framed paintings on a black back-drop; Narrator: "While you are observing these original oil paintings, the more delicate colouring, even to half-tones clearly and faithfully defined, we present a little music to bring to a close our demonstration of sound on colour film. Booth Canadian Films Limited has pioneered this field in Canada to bring you the results you have just witnessed and heard." (Music plays over a static shot of two paintings. Cut to another shot similar to first of two different paintings with alternate music accompaniment). A second identical copy is spliced to the first. This copy is shorter (167ft) and has a hair in the gate, higher contrast and a bit washed out. Shot of paintings, silent colour footage. Starts "…realism of this packet of biscuits…" The picture is partially blacked out at the bottom of the frame, then again on the right side of the frame. Very heavy base/emulsion scratches, washed out colour. Starts "…any number of prints can now be taken…" Picture is blacked out on the right side of the frame, washed out colour. Shot of paintings with narration. Shot of Beau Summers (sp?) waiting in front of camera (out-take) "We now turn to the field of art". ~ROLL TWO: This roll opens much the same as roll one except the presentation is done by a woman; Narrator (off-screen); "The microphone will now be turned over to Miss Jolene Hughes (sp?) who will give you a woman's point of view on the importance of colour in modern merchandising." Miss Hughes: "Well, from my point of view, I know that if I wanted to try a different brand of tomato juice for example, I would naturally choose the tin with the most attractive label…"~ROLL THREE; A short black & white segment identical to roll one without any titles, just the presenter and the display table.

1. Booth Canadian Films Ltd., Toronto Presents.~2. Edge codes date the film stock to 1939.~3. George Thorne Booth was also an artist who exhibited some of his paintings in Toronto. Notes from Canadian Moving Picture Digest (June 3, 1939, p. 6.); A demonstration in a new development in the advertising film or educational film was exhibited in Toronto this week by Booth Canadian Films Limited. Booth showed a 16mm sound film in technicolor, showing a display of box cartons, the colours faithfully reproduced, and also the filming of fine paintings. The film salesman speaks to you on the screen, explaining the advantages of the film. The minimum cost of a 16mm technicolor film with sound is approximately $800. The film is processed in Rochester by a special patent but prints can be made in Canada at $75 per print. Booth Canadian Films was established 12 years ago. Booth wanted to interest advertisers in film with the possibility that this type of film could be shown "with a regular program", "to be exhibited by itinerant showmen", for large national advertisers.~3. These films are part of several synchronised colour prints that are quite possibly the earliest examples of the synchronised colour print process in Canada (see also IDC 4368795).
