Radio documentary by Charles Wasserman about agriculture in Czechoslovakia. He beings by stating that 10 years ago he broadcast his first report to Canada about the subject. Then and now, he used a recording of a woman in Bohemia singing a traditional song which used to be sung by herdswomen tending the cattle or sheep. He is using the song again because agriculture in communist Eastern Europe, including Czechoslovakia, has lost its traditions. It used to be a tradition-saturated operation by small land holders and tenant farmers on large estates. It is becoming an industrial operation, so this peasant song is a thing of the past. Wasserman states that the transition to large-scale farming has not been successful. Czechoslovakia used to be a major agricultural exporter of grain, sugar beets, dairy products and meat. The country exports very few food items, on a much smaller scale, and does not produce much grain. The country has to import food from the Soviet Union and Canada. Ten percent of the arable land is worked by private farmers, mostly dairy farmers, in mountainous Slovakia, where large collective farms are not practical. More than 62 percent of the land in Czechoslovakia is worked by 7100 cooperative or collective farms and they have an average size of 1200 acres.\~Wasserman also comments on state farms, decentralized planning, incentives to improve production, and the severe difficulties faced by agriculture in Czechoslovakia. Wasserman interviews Franticek Kord, Vice-Chair of the Czechoslovak Central Planning Commission and the man in charge of agricultural planning. He also interviews a young agronomist, a technical advisor to a number of collective farms in Bohemia, about the problem of getting young people to do agricultural work when more people are moving from rural to urban areas. Next, Wasserman plays a folk song sung by five rural girls. Wasserman interviews the chairman of a dairy collective farm about how the work is organized, how the workers, and the advantages of the collective farm. Wasserman speaks to Kord, the planning chief, about increasing production through increasing the number of private farms. Professor Frank Eisler, a young economist who teaches at Prague University, speaks about the agricultural situation in Czechoslovakia. <31mn 14s>
