Readings from the works of six Canadian poets, all published by The Ryerson Press: Lionel Kearns; Lakshmi Gill, Heather Spears, Eli Mandel, Mariam Waddington and A.M. Klein. The most recent book is Pointing, by Lionel Kearns, a member of the English faculty at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia. The four poems read from this book are: Report, Prototypes, Levitation and End Poem. Lakshmi Gill was born in the Philippines and married a Canadian. She was a student of Earle Birney and taught in the English department at Notre Dame University, Nelson, British Columbia. Toppings reads four of her poems from During Rain I Plant Chrysanthemums. They are: The Eternal Season; The Ternal Question; In Vancouver and Montreal Drum Beat. Next, are poems from the book The Danish Portraits, by Heather Spears, a Canadian poet and painter living in Denmark. They are: Burn Scar, Tourist Attractions and In The Churchyard. Next are readings from Black and Secret Man, a 1964 collection of poems by Eli Mandel. They are: the title poem Black and Secret Man; Day of Atonement; David; and Thief Hanging in Baptist Halls. The next poet featured is Mariam Waddington. Toppings reads from her 1955 book of poetry The Second Silence. They are three poems of the city and its people, of time and aging, and of love, all major themes of Miriam Waddington. The poems are: Investigator; Erosion and At Midnight. To conclude this program, Toppings reads three poems by A.M. Klein, from his book The Rocking Chair. They are: Filling Station; Les Filles majeures and For The Sisters.
