Fisrt program in a 13-part CBC radio series to mark the CBC's 25th anniversary, featuring excepts of radio broadcasts held by CBC radio's archives. The series traces the history of radio, in particular the CBC. J. Frank Willis recalls highlights in broadcasting history. Willis states that the archives of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation are incomplete, but except for the tantalizing gaps where we must depend upon fallible human memory, all the things the CBC said and did on the stations of the network, during the last quarter century, are matters of record. This program begins with a commentary about Canada when the CBC began in 1936, changes that occurred in Canada around that time; and the role of the CBC in promoting Canadian unity. Archival clips include the music of Mart Kenney and his orchestra, a commercial disc of the music of Don Messer and His Islanders, reports of various sports such as tennis and golf, a report about the Grand National, a report by Bob Bowman of the boxing match between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, an airship flight, the opening of the Ottawa airport, a report by Jack Peach about the inauguration of night mail service across Canada by Trans-Canada Airlines, a report by John Kannawin about the collapse of a bridge at Niagara Falls, J. Frank Willis reporting from the Moose River Mine, a Percy Faith arrangement of the song Begin the Beguine, the launching of a ship, a speech by George V from London, England, the abdication of King Edward VIII, a CBC production of the play Julius Caesar with Charles Warburton as Brutus, a broadcast by Lord Tweedsmuir and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, a broadcast about Neville Chamberlain's efforts to prevent the Second World War, the Horst Wessel Song, Adolf Hitler giving a speech, followed by shouts of Seig Heil, and a re-enactment of the speech by Leonard W. Brockington, the chair of the Board of Governors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, on the occasion of the official opening of the CBC in 1936. <30mn>
