Presentations at the International Federation of Television Archives (IFTA/FIAT) conference held in Ottawa This is a recording of the first general session of the conference, entitled Access to Television Archive. It is chaired by Sam Kula of the Public Archives of Canada and the speakers are Lord Asa Briggs, Worcester College, Oxford, Eric Barnouw of the Library of Congress, Washington, Fernando Labrada of RTVE, Spain, and John Twomey, Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto. The question of public access to the vast stores of film, videotape and related documentation accumulating in the archives of television broadcasters has been the subject of recent studies in the United Kingdom and Canada. Whether these resources can serve the general public while remaining in the custody of broadcasters is a matter of serious concern for broadcasters throughout the world who face increasing pressure to opne those resources to a wider public. The role of IFTA/FIAT in establishing guidelines for either the orderly transfer of these resources to archival institutions or the reorganization of these resources in television archives has yet to be determined.
