Radio play in a series produced for the Department of Health and Welfare as a community service. This episode is about health care for First Nations and Inuit people. The story begins with a conversation by fictitious characters Norma Peterson and Anne Findley. Both worked as nurses but Norma quit to marry a doctor. Anne went to work with the Medical Services part of the Department of Health and Welfare. She worked at a nursing station at Boulder Lake, a northern station responsible for the health care of 648 Inuit and First Nations people. Then Anne moved to Edmonton, Alberta to work at the Camsell Hospital, specializing in orthopedics. Anne describes the medical treatment and rehabilitation offered by the hospital. Anne describes the case of Peter, a baby born in a bush camp and now under treatment at the hospital for a congenital hip dislocation. In addition to the medical treatment, the hospital relies on volunteers to entertain and play with the children. Anne explains that the children also need tender loving care (T.L.C.). Norma is enlisted as a volunteer and meets Dr. Percy. Dr. Percy explains that Peter's problem is widespread. In Manitoba's Island Lake area 28 percent of First Nations babies have congenital hip dislocations. Dr. Percy also explains other services provided by Medical Services of the Department of Health and Welfare. It operates 16 outpost nursing stations, 85 health centres, 36 major clinics, 41 occupational health units and 54 other stations of various types. Other examples of conditions treated include hare lip and heart conditions. Loss of legs and hands through freezing are common and Medical Services helps to provide prosthetics. <10mn>
