At nineteen Philip Weiss joined the Canadian Army serving overseas as a non-commissioned officer in the Army Intelligence Corps from 1943 to 1946, during the Second World War. He had taken a Canadian War Intelligence course at the Royal Military College in Kingston to prepare for this work. Although he was not an official War Artist, he used his skills to teach art courses to military personnel overseas and was involved in illustrating some publications the army produced there. To promote goodwill amongst the troops, he was asked to paint murals for the Officers' mess at the Aldershot camp in Britain. Some sketches in the Second World War Sketchbook demonstrate what the murals looked like. The murals no longer exist. Other sketches include portraits of colleagues, scenes in Nienhagen Germany, and a poster design.

Series includes 1 b&w photographic print: Group Photo of Weiss with his Battalion in front of Bahnhof's Hotel, ca. 1944 (File: 2).
