Description:

Interview of G.R. Hopping, Canadian Forestry Service forester and entomologist. This interview was recorded in Victoria, British Columbia, by G.H.D. Bedell as part of a series of interviews with Canadian foresters for the Forest Management Institute's oral history of forestry in Canada. He speaks about such subjects as: his early life; education and career development; the father and son team of Ralph and George Hopping; early problems in British Columbia; forest entomology in 1919; early bark beetle control procedures; a few personal stories; impressions of de Gryse, Swaine and Prebble; entomological research in Alberta; personal research; the comment “our old cow gave salty milk”; a criticism of the old Canadian Forestry Service organization; the future role of the Canadian Forestry Service and basic research. <40mn>
