Dramatised documentary of the story of the war from 1939 to VE Day. Mixture of short excerpts of actuality and pseudo-actuality, and dramatised incidents:~Chamberlain's announcement of the war;~Churchill: "I speak to you for the first time as Prime Minister...";~Roosevelt: "The hand that held the dagger stuck it into the back of its neighbour...";~The Battle of Britain is about to begin; Churchill: "... this was their finest hour...";~"We stood our ground..." "...although he had made vast preparations";~"Put your confidence in us", "Give us the tools and we will finish the job";~Roosevelt: "If Great Britain goes down ... a gun loaded with explosive bullets, economic as well as military";~The Axis powers knew they must win the war in 1942;~Roosevelt "...I do not need to tell you our enemies did not win the war in 1942.";~It was for Hitler to say when the war would begin; Churchill: "...it will end only when we are convinced that he has had enough...";~Roosevelt: "I have conferred with the leader on [Teheran conference] ... and from many different points of the compass";~George VI on D-Day: We need a revival of spirit, a new unconquerable resolve ... its darkest hour.";~Roosevelt on D-Day: "Almighty God ... steadfastness in their faith.";~Matthew Halton near Caen on landing: "We expected to do well on that first day... was registered by heavy machine guns ..."~"and seventy-fives ... and storm the positions with the bayonette.";~Matthew Halton from Germany, on crossing the Rhine: "There was just one more river to cross and now its crossed ... the very symbol of Germany is crossed.";~Major General Crerar speaking on part played by Canadian Forces in Europe: "The world definitely has been delivered from domination by Hitler and his pack of gangsters. It has been a great challenge ... to be the commander of such men.";~Churchill on May 8, 1945: "The German war is therefore at an end ... long live the cause of freedom. Long live the King".
