She recalls her sister, Dr. Gladys Story Cunningham, and her sister's husband, Dr. Edison Cunningham, who were medical missionaries in Szechwan (Western China) from 1925 to 1951. The two doctors were prominent members of the United Church of Canada mission, both as physicians and surgeons, as well as teachers at the West China Union University. Mrs. Sherwood Lett was born in Wawanesa, Manitoba, the daughter of John Story, one of the founders of Wawanesa Mutual Life. She is the widow of Brigadier Sherwood Lett, former Chief Justice of the British Columbia Supreme Court and Chancellor of the University of British Columbia.
