"Bill" Small of Toronto about his experiences in China. He was born in Szechwan, the son of Samuel Small, an English carpenter and lay preacher, who was responsible for building most of West China Union University. Bill Small was educated at the Canadian school in Chengtu and in Ontario. He returned to China as an administrative missionary and became bursar of West China Union University. He was in China during the Communist takeover and was one of the last missionaries to leave China. His brother, John Small, who was also born in China, was Canadian Ambassador to the People's Republic from 1972 to 1976.
