Second program in a CBC radio series that uses archival clips. This program is about radio commercials and how they changed over the years. It presents examples from the CFRB and Compo collections preserved at the Public Archives of Canada. CFRB, a Toronto radio station, kept some commercials dating as far back as 1938. The Compo Company, a disc manufacturing company in Montreal, worked for many advertising agencies. The program discusses different types of commercials for products and services, the start of radio advertising in the early 1920s, the sponsorship of radio programs by large companies, radio soap operas, the popularity of radio jingles starting in the 1930s, ads for personal care products such as shaving cream, ads after the Second World War for easy-to-prepare foods, products to help housewives do their work, the work done by radio station employees who researched and wrote ads for local businesses, the work done by the large advertising agencies, such as Maclaren, Cockfield-Brown and J. Walter Thompson, commercials included in the soap operas, ads for women listeners, how commercials degraded women, stereotyping both men and women in commercials, and the role of advertising. The clips include: a Pepsi Cola commercial; the intro for the radio soap opera Big Sister, an Orange Crush soda pop commercial, a Sunny Boy cereal commercial, other radio jingles, a Bromo Seltzer commercial, an ad for the Globe and Mail newspaper sports coverage, a public service announcement for the National Clothing Drive for war victims, an ad for the Grey Cup, a Continential noodle soup commercial, ads for cleaning products Spic and Span and Rinso, an ad for George's Appliances, a Q-tip commercial, a clip from the radio show Our Gal Sunday from 1956, and a Jergen's Lotion commercial. <30mn>
